Web Developer vs Web Designer - The Turning Gear

Web Developer vs Web Designer:
Which is the right choice?

As the digital world spreads into all aspects of our lives, it is not uncommon for you to need web developers and web designers to assist you in building your projects. Unfortunately, the lines between the two roles have been blurred since the work they do is fairly similar. Especially from an outsider’s perspective.

So, what is the difference between a web developer and a web designer?

How can knowing the difference help you make the right decision when hiring?

Let us start by breaking down the two roles and how they relate to one another.

Web Designers
Web designers use tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to help them create a look and feel for your website. This includes things like designing the color scheme, layout, and the flow of the pages. It also includes designing the user interface and the user experience, sometimes called UI/UX.

The majority of what these designers do is creative work, and as such the designs produced by two different web designers may be completely different, depending on their background and style. However, the best designers have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of design, and are capable of producing a wide variety of designs for a wide variety of projects. They are also capable of working with you to understand their design, while modifying it to suit your specific goals and tastes.

Web Developers
Web developers are the ones responsible for creating the code that makes your website work. There are two types of web development: front-end and back-end. Front-end developers are in charge of making sure the website looks, feels, and works as the web designers have mocked up. Back-end developers are in charge of all of the server side work that needs to be done so that your web application runs smoothly and gets the data it needs.

Who to Hire
Depending on your needs either one may be a good fit. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to know how your application will need to work to accomplish your goals. This is why it is usually best to hire a company that has both designers and developers at their disposal. That way, no matter the details of your project, you will have the right person to get the job done.

Hiring tech people can be tough, especially when you are not completely sure about how your project needs to be built. Web design is about creating the look and feel for your website, while Web development is about making your website work. When in doubt on which to hire, choose a company that does both so that you know you are in good hands.
